What is Al Shaqab?

The Al Shaqab equestrian center will allow us to further develop the Arabian horse breed in Qatar and throughout the world. It will provide Qatari's with a connection to the country's rich tradition of horses and equestrian arts.

Al Shaqab is Qatar Foundation’s (QF) visionary equestrian center, home to the legendary equestrian skills of the State of Qatar. Here, world-class facilities combine with the rich traditions of Arabian horses. Founded in 1992 by His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Amir of Qatar, Al Shaqab joined QF in 2004.

Highest standards in Arabian horses

Al Shaqab is now the region’s leading equine education resource center. Innovative, educational and competitive, it boasts the highest standards in the breeding and showing of Arabian horses.

Spread out over 900,000 square meters and with a stable capacity for more than 400 horses, Al Shaqab also stands out for its dynamic architectural design, with a central horseshoe shape creating a welcoming environment for both human and equine visitors.

State-of-the art amenities

Carefully designed to maintain maximum safety and hygiene standards, Al Shaqab provides multiple performance arenas for international show jumping and dressage competitions, a full-service riding academy and equestrian club, and an endurance training center.

It also houses the region's most advanced veterinary clinic, hospital and research facilities and a state-of-the-art center for Al Shaqab's world-renowned Arabian breeding program.

Did you know?

  • Al Shaqab takes its name from a historic battle against the Ottomans. Taking place in the town of Al Rayyan in 1893, the battle of Al Shaqab, or Al Wajba as it is also known, saw the Qataris, lead by Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al-Thani, defeat the Ottomans. This historic event led to Qatar’s independence.
